History

The History of St. Austin Catholic School

For more than 100 years, St. Austin Catholic School has prepared students to be Christ-centered, academically strong, moral community leaders. You’ll find our school nestled in the heart of downtown on the western edge of The University of Texas campus.

We are a school steeped in faith, culture, history and tradition. At our founding, the Dominican Sisters of Houston relocated Holy Rosary School (1915), a school for Mexican immigrant children, to a one-room house at 1911 San Antonio Street.

A year later, the school became known as Newman School, reflecting our Paulist heritage. With the addition of an eighth grade in 1941-1942, our name changed to St. Austin Catholic School.

During the 1950s, the city and the parish experienced tremendous growth, resulting in the demolishment of the original school to make way for a new elementary school on the same site. When the Dominican Sisters departed Austin in the late 1970s, their Newman Hall dormitories became home to our Middle School.

Under the ministry of the Paulist Fathers, our school continues to flourish. Today, more than 215 students attend St. Austin Catholic School in grades Pre-K3 through 8th. Our families represent more than 40 zip codes across greater Austin.

There’s a special chemistry at work at St. Austin Catholic School.  We combine a solid faith foundation, exceptional academics and active community participation. It is evident in the academic achievements of our students. It is visible in the appreciation and acceptance that our students have for diversity. It is clear in our students’ service to our community and their living faith.
