Middle School Dances
The Middle School holds three dances each year, with the parents of each of the middle school grades hosting and chaperoning one dance.
Here is a rough timeline of what parent volunteers need to do to prepare for the dance.
Before the Dance:
- Reserve the sound system. The school has our own now.
- If you are using a computer with iTunes, you will need the connection cable to hook it to the sound system. The church has one that they might loan us if we don't have one with ours. The cable is white and is stored with their sound system.
- Arrange for a DJ volunteer.
- Screen music ahead of time. Songs must be clean versions. The kids like songs that are group or line dance, like YMCA, the Cupid Shuffle, the Macarena, etc. They like some disco songs and some 80s music. Ask them what songs they want.
- Start decorating the dance area around 5pm.
- The kids like to have the windows blacked out with dark paper.
- Set up the food & any decorations.
- Set up a check-in table to collect money, permission forms, etc.
- You can invite the priests to come if you like.
- At the check-in table, No kids can be admitted w/o permission forms. Have them call their parents to come back and sign a form.
- No outside guests unless cleared with the principal. There is one dance during the year where they can bring a friend.
- Kids cannot leave and come back. They should stay inside during the dance. You can go over rules with the principal.
- The kids will huddle in one mass away from parents... try not to hover.
- Not all the kids will dance. Some will just hang out and talk.
- Try to play 1 slow song for every 3 fast songs.
- Have someone pour drinks & monitor the food table.
- Don't let kids hang out in the bathroom for too long, or roam the halls.
After the Dance:
- Immediately after the last song is announced, parents can quietly start to pack up food.
- Immediately after the last song is over, turn on the lights and ask kids to start cleaning up if they can stay for a few minutes.
- Pack up stereo system & put away.
- Sweep the floor.
- Put furniture back.
- Take down all decorations, pick up trash.
- Send leftover food home with donors or whoever.
- Basically, get everything back to normal before you turn off the lights and lock up.
